Vol and Gator fans compete in a blood drive

Tennessee's big game against the Florida Gators kicks off Saturday, September 15th, but the field won't be the only place for competition during this year's rivalry.

Vol fans take on Gator fans to see who can donate the most blood starting Monday, September 10 and lasting until Friday, September 14.  This is the seventh year of the competition.

The blood drive in East Tennessee will be at Medic Regional Blood Center, while University of Florida fans will donate at LifeSouth Blood Center out of Gainesville.

There are more incentives to donate other than beating the Gator fans.  Donors will receive a free game day t-shirt and a coupon for a complimentary small pizza from Snappy Tomato.

Medic Regional Blood Center has two donor centers: 1601 Ailor Avenue and 11000 Kingston Pike in Farragut.  Several community and campus drives are scheduled as well.  Click here to find specific locations and hours for Medic Regional Blood Center.

Donors must be at least 17 years or older, weigh 110 pounds or more and must provide some form of identification.

Medic Regional Blood Center spokesperson Christi Fightmaster hopes the University of Tennessee takes home the prize once again this year.

"Vol fans squeaked by with a victory last year after trailing the Gators for the first three days," said Fightmaster.  "Medic hopes to get a great start this year and really prove to Gator fans that the Volunteer spirit is alive and well in East Tennessee."
