A street near Downtown Knoxville now honors a former community leader. On Thursday, city officials changed the name of "Travis Avenue" to "James Dick Lane" in honor of the late James Dick, Sr.

The Joy of Music School is located along the street. Dick founded the school in 1998 to give free music lessons and instruments to children who couldn't afford them but want to learn. Dick passed away last year.

School directors say the street's new name will help his legacy live on.

"James Dick was a really special man. Family was important to him, community was important to him, and having a permanent piece of the city named after him ensures us that his legacy will live on," said Francis Graffeo, executive director of the Joy of Music School.

The school operates six days a week. It runs on donations, and lessons are taught by volunteer instructors.
