Tennessee and North Carolina State haven't met on a football field since 1939, but there is some familiarity between the two.

Vols coach Derek Dooley played at Virginia when North Carolina State coach tom O'Brien was an assistant for the Cavaliers.

Dooley said O'Brien is still a friend and a mentor.

One of the city's most visited historic sites will get $1,000 for its preservation project.

City council approved the donation to the James White Fort Association on Tuesday.

Wood shingle roofs on three of the log cabins at the fort need to be replaced. They've deteriorated so much that many are leaking.

Estimates for material and labor are expected to cost between $8,000 and $10,000.

New students introduced to UT traditions

New students introduced to UT traditions

UT students are getting settled in for a new semester, and Monday evening they got an up close look at their campus' biggest attraction.

As part of Welcome Week, UT allowed students to go inside Neyland Stadium and take a class photo. They also got a chance to hear from coaches and learn more about the university's traditions.

The new football season kicks off in less than two weeks, and Coach Derek Dooley wasted no time pumping up his key fans.

A lot has happened in Knoxville since it was founded in the late 1700s.

You can learn a lot about that history on foot during a Knoxville Walking Tour.

Laura Still holds several part time jobs including leading walking tours.

"I thought ok that's what I need to do. I can be an ambassador for Knoxville. I love to tell stories and there's so many great stories in Knoxville," she said.

The tours appeal to visitors and locals alike.

Thousands of UT students move into residence halls

Thousands of UT students move into residence halls

It's a process University of Tennessee administrators describe as "organized chaos."

Five thousand UT students, mostly freshman who will live on campus this school year, moved into the residence halls Saturday.

Faculty and staff members were on hand to welcome the students, and 300 volunteers from the community helped families move their students into their rooms.

"It's a tremendous amount of effort to get all these people in here in an organized way," said Chancellor Jimmy Cheek.

The Rock will be back on campus in time for fall classes

UT officials say the most "painted" icon on campus should be back in time for the start of classes next week.

The Rock is currently fenced off with the message brb (be right back) painted on it.

Officials said they had to block the icon for safety reasons, while crews worked on nearby sidewalks and the university's new music center.
