Newest UT dorm in 43 years set to open

(WBIR-University of Tennessee) When students arrive on the University of Tennessee campus in one month, there will be a new building that'll be home for more than 700 students.

"This would be much different than what we have on campus now," said Frank Cuevas, the assistant vice chancellor for student life and executive director of university housing.

The Fred D. Brown Residence Hall will be located at the intersection of Melrose Place and Andy Holt Avenue, housing both lower and upperclassmen.

Cuevas said what makes this dorm different is how the rooms are designed.

"(Students) can reconfigure their room in eight different ways," Cuevas said. "The furniture we provide is flexible in any kind of configuration."

"This project was in the planning in the mid 2000s and we placed it on hold for some time, as we were looking on our campus master plan, and a little over three years ago we felt it was time to start the construction of that," Cuevas added.

This dorm is an effort to renovate or replace half a dozen dorms on campus by 2019.

"We have Gibbs Hall under construction now and recently we received approval from the trustees to begin construction on the West Campus redevelopment later this year," he added.

Move in date is set for August 16th, and Cuevas said they are on schedule for completion.
