Standoff ends; 2 elementary schools taken off lockdown


A 31-year-old Knoxville man has been arrested in Friday morning's downtown bank robbery, according to the FBI.

Jason L. Cates, also identified as Jason Cate, faces a preliminary hearing in federal court Jan. 26, according to a release Friday night from FBI Supervisory Special Agent Marshall Stone. Cates was taken into custody about 11:45 a.m. at 1308 W. Baxter Ave.

Cates was among six people taken into custody following the Regions Bank robbery and a standoff at the Baxter Avenue home.

Officials placed six people in custody during a standoff at a North Knoxville home, following a bank robbery in downtown Knoxville Friday morning.

As a result of the standoff, authorities placed Beaumont Elementary and Maynard Elementary on lockdown. After the arrests, Knox County Schools took the elementary schools off lockdown.

A person matching the description of a bank robbery suspect from earlier Friday morning went into a house on Baxter Avenue, according to Knoxville police.

When police arrived, a man and a woman were in the yard outside of the house and turned themselves in to officers.

At about noon, officials announced they took two other men and women into custody.

Shortly before 9:15 a.m., a suspect enter the Regions Bank on Gay Street and stole an undisclosed amount of money.
