Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon kicks off in 11 days | News
The largest competitive road race in East Tennessee will descend on Knoxville in just 11 days.
March 28 will mark the 11th year for the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon. The race began in 2005, and more than 8,000 competitors will participate in the 2015 race.
Wednesday morning, marathon committee members held a press conference in Neyland Stadium to share more details about the race on the weekend of March 28 and 29. The Covenant Kids Run and expo will be on Saturday, and the marathon will follow on Sunday.
The night before the marathon, there will be a spaghetti dinner where competitors can load up on carbs.
The marathon brings a big boost to Knoxville's economy: a third of competitors come in from out of state.
Director of the marathon, Jason Altman, said the race is a community-driven event.
"It gives me goosebumps every year to see the community rally together to put on a fantastic event," said Altman. "For a third (of competitors) to come from out of town, the marathon is a great way to showcase our city to the country."
If you want to participate, there's still time to sign up, but online registration will close soon. The last day to register online and guarantee your spot in the race is Monday, March 23. Limited space may be available at the Expo on March 28, which is the last day to sign up.
