New Bike Racks Spring Up Across Downtown Knoxville

New Bike Racks Spring Up Across Downtown Knoxville

Visitors to the Old City will find an interesting new addition to the streetscape on Central Street: Knoxville's first "bike corral," which converts an on-street parking space into parking for bicycles.

Bike corrals are used in areas that have narrow sidewalks where racks can't fit, or when there is a high demand for bike parking.

Six bike racks have been installed in a parking spot in front of Old City Java.

The City of Knoxville has closed Union Avenue between State Street and South Central Street to traffic for a week starting Tuesday, Nov. 13 because of ongoing construction work.

This construction will also block the Union Avenue entrance and exit for the garage.

Officials expect this closure to continue through at least Tuesday, Nov. 20.  The city expects other street and lane closures around the garage as work continues into the next several months.

Knoxvillians say panhandling still a problem

Knoxvillians say panhandling still a problem

Six years after the city of Knoxville passed an ordinance banning aggressive panhandling in its limits, residents say they still see it happening around town.

Businesses like Trio on Market Square say sometimes panhandlers will bother customers who eat outdoors on their patio.

"It makes customers uncomfortable and we want to make everyone here really comfortable," said Trio employee Patrick Tice.  "That's the point of a restaurant."

Downtown resident Hayley Gregg said panhandlers stop there occasionally as well.

City discusses plans for State Street Garage expansion

We're getting another look at plans to expand a Downtown Knoxville parking garage used by thousands of East Tennesseans.

Thursday, the city held another informational meeting about the plans for the State Street Garage. They say they want everyone to be on the same page and know what to expect.

As it stands now, the construction work won't really impact anyone during the next few months. Officials say January is when people downtown could see a few traffic hang-ups.
