Pellissippi State nursing program moves closer to national accreditation

Pellissippi State's nursing program is one step closer to national accreditation.

The Tennessee Department of Health's board of nursing approved Pellissippi State Community College's associate degree program in nursing last month. That decision will allow Pellissippi to pursue national accreditation.

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission has invited Pellissippi to complete a written self-study. When that is turned in, the NLNAC will visit the campus and a governing board review will determine if the program will receive accreditation.

With a new look and a new logo, education officials hope the new brand for the East Tennessee STEM hub will expand their regional efforts.

Monday morning, education officials unveiled the new brand named STEMspark. That replaces the former name of the STEM hub, Knoxville Area Resources for STEM Teaching.

Officials say the branding will better help the L&N STEM Academy to reach more people and get their emphasis on math and science across to students.

One UT tailgate goes green

One UT tailgate goes green

More than 4,000 vol fans came out for a waste-free tailgate party before the Tennessee kickoff against Akron on Saturday night.

All the food, plates and utensils at the Parent's Association Tailgate was either compositable or recyclable.

Organizers said just three years ago, the same tailgate produced more than 30 trash bags full of garbage. But today, there was zero.

The tailgate was part of the University of Tennessee "Make Orange Green" initiative. This was the "No Waste" tailgate's second year.

Vol fans' mood much quieter this week

The Vols take on the University of Akron Zips Saturday night.

Even though they are expected to pull off a victory, the non-conference game isn't getting a lot of excitement from fans.

One week after the Vols lost to the Florida Gators, the mood has noticeably changed on campus.

"Everybody was going out and buying orange. Getting ready for the big game. It was just exciting all around," said Vol fan, Justin Bach of last week.

"We all had hope. Then it was crushed," said Stephen Jarrett.
