Tennessee fans remember Alabama rivalry history

As the Volunteers prepared to face Alabama this weekend, fans remember the history behind their long-standing rivalry.

"So, you going make me a prediction on the ball game?" Rusty Manis asked one of his customers at the Western Plaza Barber Shop Friday afternoon.

He remembers former UT coaches who led historic teams.

"We've had several good coaches through the years. We've had Neyland, then Majors, then Fulmer."

UT hosts the executive president of communications for the NFL

Executive President of Communications for the National Football League Paul Hicks spoke to the East Tennessee Public Relations Professionals and students during the University of Tennessee's Public Relations Day on Friday.

UT held the biannual event at its conference center on campus.

Hicks began working with the NFL in July 2010 to help bridge communications between owners and players in the midst of that lockout.

Friday's activities also included a panel discussion with other PR professionals from East Tennessee and across the country.

Vols release 2013 football schedule

Life in the SEC is never easy, but there are tough paths and then really brutal football schedules.

The Tennessee Vols 2013 slate falls into the latter category.  The SEC released the conference schedule and the Vols their entire 2013 schedule on Thursday.

It includes road games with current top five teams Oregon, Florida and Alabama, plus home games with Georgia, South Carolina and Auburn.

The schedule also includes two open dates, which all league teams have due to the fall 2013 calendar.

Following the third SEC loss this season, and two tough opponents ahead, Coach Derek Dooley's future with the UT football program has become the subject of debate among fans.

Sunday morning, the "Rock" on campus displayed a message apparently calling for the coach's firing along with a list of the artist's disappointments.

City Council approves $1.5M for University Commons project

City Council approves $1.5M for University Commons project

Knoxville city council members voted on second reading to give the developers of the University Commons project more than $1 million.

Developers have said they were $3 million short on funding for their effort to build a Walmart and Publix near UT's campus. They said they needed the city to help make up part of the difference.

So Tuesday by a vote of seven to two, city council gave final approval for using $1.5 million in public funds for the project.

New cancer center opens at UT

After a year of construction, the new UT Medical Center Cancer Institute is now open.

Survivors, administrators, and physicians cut the ribbon Tuesday morning.

The new center is nearly three times larger than the old one.
It also holds a lot more, including the cancer institute's "breast center," an imaging center, chemotherapy areas, and eventually the radiation oncology department.
