Record number of "e-books" sold at UT campus

Imagine walking around the University of Tennessee campus, and not seeing students overloaded with heavy, expensive textbooks in tow.

That could soon become a reality, as a growing number of electronic textbooks, or "e-books" are available and being sold at the university bookstore.

"A lot of students have started to request e-books," said UT bookstore manager Tommi Jamison. "They're tired of carrying 3-to-4 lbs., each and they may have 6-to-8 books to carry."

The trendy retailer Urban Outfitters is coming to Downtown Knoxville.

The store will be going into the Arnstein Building off Market Square and plans to open in spring 2013.

At Tuesday's city council meeting, there was a vote to offer a $250,000 incentive to help bring the retailer to the city. The money will help the developer offset expenses related to getting the store open.

Gay Street improvements expand beyond 100 block

Gay Street improvements expand beyond 100 block

With many ongoing improvements to Downtown Knoxville, Market Square and the 100 block of Gay Street have been a primary focus.

Now, plans are in place to attract more people to a lesser known section of the downtown area.

Mer Mer's Bakery sits just beyond the I-40 overpass, on the 600 block of North Gay Street. City officials have now extended beautification efforts to that end of the street.

"Hopefully it will draw more customers and interest on our side!" said Caroline Lawson, who works in the bakery.

She says improvement is already visible.
