Red Cross volunteers keep Vol fans safe at Neyland

Red Cross volunteers keep Vol fans safe at Neyland

A sold up Neyland Stadium holds enough people to make it the sixth largest city in the State of Tennessee.

And just like in a real city, emergency personnel need to quickly respond to dozens of game-day emergencies.

It's possible, in large part, to a group of Red Cross volunteers called First Aid Service Team.

Long before there's any action on the field, there's lots of action in the stands.

Three hours before kick off the volunteers assemble to get assignments and a briefing on expectations for the day.

The Tigers are in town.

Thousands of excited University of Missouri fans rolled into Knoxville this weekend, ready for a big SEC game day.

They came from all over, with many driving the 610 miles from Columbia, Mo.

"It was definitely coming down, getting a taste of the SEC; the SEC is the greatest football conference in the county," explained 1999 Missouri Graduate David Rogers, who flew in from Kansas City.

In less than 24 hours the Vols will kick off at Neyland Stadium for what fans hope will be the first SEC victory of the season.

Fans from the other side are taking on Tennessee in a brand new SEC rivalry.

In September, Gator fans came to town.

In October, Bama fans showed up.

Now it's November, and Mizzou fans are here in Knoxville.

"It was about an 11 or 12 hour drive. 677 miles from home to here," Mizzou fan Ed Kays said.

His RV got just 7 mpg on the trip to Tennessee.

UT men's basketball season tips off by helping kids in need

The UT men's basketball season tipped off on Monday by helping those in need.

Vol fans got into the home opener for free if they donated a new, unwrapped toy to the Mission of Hope. The toys will be delivered to children in need in rural Appalachia this holiday season.

"We try to go to about 27 schools and 17,000 children that without this they probably would not have Christmas at all," said David Burnett, a volunteer with Mission of Hope.
