Dispatchers say there is no sign of ice but the roads are extremely slick.  They have not had any major wrecks.

American Red Cross hosts fundraiser in Knoxville Monday

The American Red Cross is hosting a Hurricane Sandy recovery effort fundraiser at its West Knoxville location on Monday.

The fundraiser drive-thru will be open from 7:00 am until 6:00 pm at its location on 6921 Middlebrook Pike.

The organization is asking for people to drop off monetary donations only.

Some local celebrities will make stops at the drive-thru. The Knoxville Ice Bears' hockey players are scheduled to drop by around 2:00 pm. Pro Bass Master Ott DeFoe will visit with people from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm.

The potential for piles of snow in the higher elevations of East Tennessee from Superstorm Sandy kept road crews busy Tuesday.  That includes Cocke County where the highway department maintains 700 miles of roads, many of which are in mountainous areas.

Superstorm Sandy is causing flight delays and cancellations throughout the country.

So far, more than 15,000 flights have been cancelled and in Knoxville, we are seeing the effects.

Robin Vanleigh is sort of lucky, "I'm going from here to Chicago to Phoenix."

She's not headed to the Northeast, but she's still worried about her flight plan.

"So far, everything is on time, but since I am flying into Chicago and Sandy is making her way closer and closer, I am getting a little concerned that I might get stuck there," explained Robin.

Thousands of flights are canceled throughout the country. At McGhee
Tyson airport, as of 8:00 am Tuesday 6 flights had been canceled with
more expected throughout the day and Wednesday.

The cities affected are New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.

If your travel plans include Atlanta and Charlotte, those destinations are showing on time departures, however, you might have s canceled flight from there.

The airport in Chattanooga shows no cancellations. The Nashville airport has cancellations all over the Northeast.

A dry spell has arrived for the downtown Knoxville toddler population!

According to the City of Knoxville the play fountains in Market Square and in the Krutch Park extension are officially closed for the season. They will reopen in the spring.

Knoxville's homeless looking for a warm place to stay earlier than usual

The Knoxville Area Rescue Ministry shelter has been busy due to the chilly weather.

The KARM shelter housed 218 men Monday night, exceeding their 200-person capacity.

While KARM expects this trend during the winter months, Marketing Manager Sue Renfro says an uptick in those who need a place to sleep doesn't usually happen in early October.

Despite larger numbers, earlier than usual, Renfro says they are prepared to meet the needs of Knoxville's homeless population
