City leaders, business owners meet to discuss Cumberland Ave. project

The City of Knoxville met with Cumberland Avenue business owners Tuesday evening to present updates and take questions on the Cumberland Corridor project.

The project is designed to improve traffic patterns on the strip while also making it more attractive and accessible to the public.

New drawings and design decisions from the past year were presented to those in attendance. Various city officials also took questions from concerned business owners concerning everything from turn movements, construction timetables and rights-of-way.

According to the project manager, most Cumberland business-owners are supportive of the changes.

"Most everyone is very supportive of this project because they recognize that Cumberland Avenue as it stands now does not work well and they're very excited about the changes that are coming and the possible improvement to business and opportunities for additional development to come in and really support the area year-round," said Anne Wallace, project manager.

Wallace says Cumberland Avenue businesses struggle during the parts of the year when the university is not in session.
