Supreme Court Justice Kagan visits UT

The fourth female to sit on the Supreme Court was in East Tennessee on Friday. Justice Elena Kagan presented the annual Rose Lecture at UT.

In the audience were law students and faculty, along with federal, state and local judiciary.

Part of her discussion focused on being a female sitting on the Supreme Court. She credits the women who came before her who helped pave the way.

"I feel pretty lucky that I haven't had to surmount all that many barriers or jump over that many hurdles because I was a woman," said Justice Kagan.

"She is an inspiration, I think. It's really amazing to see more and more women sitting on the court and to have more diversity on the Supreme Court. I just wanted to hear her speak about her experience," said Catherine Shteynberg, a UT faculty member.

UT's college of law sponsored the event.

President Barack Obama appointed Justice Kagan in 2010. She's the 112th Supreme Court justice, and third sitting justice to visit UT over the past two decades.
